Salary Range: $61,864-$68,050
The City of Fredericksburg is recruiting for the position of Director of Victim Witness Services.
Under administrative direction, performs professional and administrative work in leading the victim witness services unit, managing the Victim/Witness Assistance Program, supervising two victim advocates, liaising with multiple agencies on multidisciplinary teams for special/ vulnerable victims (child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence victims), and serves on the office leadership team. This position requires excellent communication skills and considerable tact and a desire to help and work with crime victims from many different backgrounds.
The Victim/Witness Assistance Program provides services and support to victims and witnesses for the purpose of alleviating crime related trauma and encouraging cooperation/participation in the criminal justice system. Work involves developing, planning and implementing program services to meet victim/witness needs, requirements of the Victim Witness Rights Act as written in §19.2-11.01 of the Virginia Code and the guidelines of the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Manages program budget, funds and expenditures to include grant development and administration; provides direct assistance and services to victims of crimes and witnesses to include crisis intervention, emergency assistance, and referrals to other agencies; informs victims regarding the legal proceedings; prepares victims and witnesses for participation in trial proceedings; prepares a variety of reports, statistical information and summaries regarding program activities; coordinates services with other agencies; and supervises Victim-Witness staff, including interns and volunteers.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior direct victim advocate experience, deep knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system, including justice-system based advocates, bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or criminal justice, strong interpersonal skills, including focusing on a growth mindset, following a collaborative approach, and ability to work both independently and on different office teams. Candidates with equivalent experience will be considered.
This is an exempt position. Occasional work outside regular business hours is required for assistance to victims at court and in the field.
