ASSISTANT COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY
Salary Range:  $87,049-$95,754

The Office has one full-time prosecutor vacancy. The person hired will serve as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. Salary is negotiable depending upon experience. The successful candidate will prosecute crimes and sentencing revocations in all City courts; possess a Juris Doctor degree; be thorough and knowledgeable of criminal laws and procedure; have excellent trial skills and a focus on justice; and be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar. At least one (1) year of experience as a litigation attorney is preferred. Interest in or prior experience in prosecutions of child victim cases and/or domestic violence cases is a plus.

The work involves preparation of jury and non-jury trials in misdemeanor and felony cases, preparing procedural and substantive court pleadings and briefs, and negotiating plea agreements. It is expected that the person in this position will primarily prosecute misdemeanors and misdemeanor appeals, with felony cases assigned at the discretion of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. The successful candidate reports to the Commonwealth’s Attorney and Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney. The position requires the exercise of professional judgment, impeccable ethics, and the highest organizational skills on time management and responsiveness. A background check is required for any candidate hired as a prosecutor with the office.


The attorney hired is also responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to public officials, law enforcement officials, victims of crime and the general public. Must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in determining the proper course of action in a variety of legal cases and situations. Must also exercise tact, courtesy and discretion in frequent contact with crime victims, law enforcement, judicial officials, public officials, the general public, and defendants without attorneys.

The Office of the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Office is an office of eight prosecutors, including the elected commonwealth’s attorney, a chief deputy commonwealth’s attorney, one senior assistant commonwealth’s attorney, and five assistant commonwealth’s attorneys.  The office prioritizes strong skills in both solo-chair and team prosecution approaches and is organized to facilitate collaborative approaches to prosecution. The Office has a commitment to community-facing approaches to prosecution.
