What You’ll Do
As the Assistant Director of Human Resources, you will be the HR Director’s strategic partner and a trusted advisor to City leaders. You will help guide the systems, policies, relationships, and talent practices that enable employees to serve Fredericksburg well.
| Staff Development and Leadership Lead, coach, and develop Human Resources staff while helping shape departmental priorities and service delivery. | Collaboration with Department Heads Partner with department heads on complex employee relations, performance management, leave, policy, and compliance matters. |
| Process Improvements and Coordination Advance practical improvements in recruitment, classification and compensation, HRIS/pay and benefits coordination, and workforce initiatives. | Interim Leadership Role Serve as Acting Director of Human Resources when the Director is absent. |

Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in HR, public administration, business administration, management, or a closely related field.
- At least six years of progressively responsible professional HR experience, including supervisory, management, or lead responsibility.
- The ability to navigate sensitive personnel matters with discretion, fairness, and confidence.
- Strong communication skills and a genuine commitment to responsive public service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Public-sector or local government HR experience.
- SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP, IPMA-SCP, IPMA-CP, SPHR, or PHR certification.
